Diarmuid Gavin asked Shomera to build the pavilion for his entry in the Chelsea Flower Show. Working with an artist’s impression Shomera needed to design and engineer the pavilion. Apart from the challenge to replicate the curves and openings working on different planes, the structure had to be built off-site, taken apart, transported from Dublin to London and put together for the show and thendeconstructed for the trip back to Dublin.
Concept The design of the pavilion incorporates a rolling curve in the roof across an 11.5 metre span with very little internal structural support. Rather than alter the design for an easier manufacturing process, the Shomera engineers created a bespoke timber framing system which would support the structure and form the curve of the pavilion to maintain the integrity of Diarmuid’s design. |
 | Construction The pavilion was manufactured in three intersecting sections which could be joined without looking as though they were separate pieces. Shomera used laminated plywood members to produce the dominant curve sections that flow through the entire structure. The gutter system was concealed behind the aluminium fascia and the building was clad internally and externally with cedar. Diarmuid wanted the lines in the windows and doors to be thin, sleek and not bulky, which required all the joinery to be made by Shomera. There are no solid walls in the pavilion, so the recessed lighting in the two intersecting studios and external lighting are all controlled by a remote, wireless switch. |
 | Transportation The building was transported in three parts and made the 600 mile return journey without any damage. The use of a “torsion box” structure in the main element ensured strength without being too heavy for lifting and transportation. |
| Completion First revealed on the “Late, Late Show”, the pavilion is a true representation of Diarmuid’s initial design and was a striking centrepiece to his garden entry. Diarmuid was delighted with the skill and craftsmanship displayed by Shomera and he was awarded a Silver-Gilt medal, his highest award to date in Chelsea. |
Testimonial “I am very impressed with how Shomera’s expertise brought my design to life in a way that will excite and stimulate all visitors to the garden” - Diarmiud Gavin |
