The clients live in a semi-detached single-storey home and needed additional living space. After considering a sun-room type extension and a traditionally-built block extension, the clients chose the Shomera Design Service to recommend solutions for extending their home.
The existing accommodation was compact, so an extension of approximately 200 square feet had the potential to dramatically increase the living space and the clients’ enjoyment of their home.
Concept
A key requirement was to match the new extension with the existing finishes in the house. While doing this, there was an opportunity to have the rear elevation of the extension express some design features. During the design stage, stone cladding was considered as an option to create a feature. However, the preference for a large amount of natural light and enjoyment of the garden from the extension took priority.
A large sliding door made from Iroko teak with angled glazing in the gable provided the design feature. The large amount of glazing, three roof lights, and a fully glazed internal sliding door set ensure a return of natural light into the rooms of the existing house.The garden, which was being re-landscaped, is an important feature of the property to the clients and external soffit lighting provides a new ambiance to the garden.
Completed In Three Weeks
The project was completed in just over three weeks and included lifting and re-laying the paving stones to reposition their recently laid patio.
